St. Petersburg is officially declared a new capital of Russia

1757

Upon the initiative of Count Ivan Shuvalov the Senate establishes Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Initially, the Academy occupied I. Shuvalov’s mansion on Italianskaya street.

1762

Construction of Winter Palace designed by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli is completed. Later this building will be occupied by the State Hermitage Museum.

1764

Academy of Arts is granted Privilege and Charter from the Empress Catherine the Great. The Privilege defined social status of artists and exempted them from taxation and military service. The Charter contained internal regulations and described the system of art education.

A Training School is founded at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. It functioned till 1840.

Construction of a new building for the Imperial Academy of Arts is started on the bank of the Neva river (the building will be completed in 1788). This building is presently occupied by the Ilya Repin Institute of Arts and Science and the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts.

The Hermitage, the art museum of the imperial court in St. Petersburg, is founded. Catherine the Great makes first purchases for the future museum.


1802

Academy of Arts undergoes a reform. ‘Additional articles’ are introduced to its Charter. According to these articles, ‘the Academy is entitled to decorate the capitals and other cities’. All significant public constructions are entrusted to the Academy’s alumni.

1825

Construction of the Mikhailovsky Palace designed by Carlo Rossi is completed. Since 1898 this building will be occupied by the Russian Museum.

1830

The Academic Charter is amended again in order to turn the Academy into a higher education establishment. Eligibility terms include 14 year age, perfect reading and writing skills in Russian and French, and sound knowledge of mathematics. Applicants should also be able to copy human figures from prints and drawings and to sketch architectural orders.

1833

Architect Konstantin Thon designs the new quayside in front of the Academy and adorns it with two figures of granite Sphinxes, authentic archaeological finds discovered in the vicinity of Thebes, the ancient capital of Egypt.

1859

Academy of Arts undergoes a new reform. A new academic Charter is adopted. It sets up higher requirements for general education of students. All applicants for the Department of Architecture must be gymnasium graduates.

1863

The so called ‘revolt of the fourteen’ takes place. Fourteen students of the Academy headed by Ivan Kramskoi wrote petitions to the Academic Council asking to grant them free choice of subjects for their Major Gold Medal examination. Having received no positive response the students refused to enter the Major Gold Medal competition and demonstratively left the Academy to form community of artists called the St. Petersburg Artel' formally and financially independent from the Academy. However, they did not break up with the Academy for good. Later almost all them, including Ivan Kramskoi, received the titles of academicians.

1871
On 29 November the first exhibition of the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions openes in the premises of the Academy. This was the first association of realist artists from Moscow and St. Petersburg independent from the Academy. Most of them were Academy alumni, including Ivan Kramskoi, Nikolai Ge, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Vasily Polenov, etc.

1872

Pavel Chistyakov starts teaching at the Academy of Arts. He will work at the Academy until his death becoming the most influential promoter of realist method in the academic school of painting. Ilya Repin, Victor Vasnetsov, Vasily Surikov, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel, Andrei Ryabushkin and others considered Pavel Chistyakov their teacher.

1879

The Central School of Engineering Design is established by Baron Alexander von Stieglitz in Solyanoi gorodok (borough) of St. Petersburg.

1884

Vladimiro-Mariinsky hospice (presently known as the Academic Dacha) starts functioning. This country estate with a park located on the bank of Msta River in the neighborhood of Vyshniy Volochek town will be used for summer work by the students of the Academy. It will exist till 1917 and, after a 30 year break, will resume functioning as a House of Artists in 1948.

1893

Imperial Academy of Arts undergoes another reform. A new Charter of the Academy taking effect in fall 1894 is adopted. According to the new Charter, the Academy entitled to “support, develop and disseminate art in Russia” is defined as the Assembly of 60 full members and 20 honorary members. Educational tasks are relegated to the Higher Art School affiliated with the Academy and headed by Rector.

1894

At the reformed Academy, leading realist artists, including Vladimir Makovski, Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Alexei Kivshenko and later A. Kiselev, N. Dubovsky, V. Savinsky, D. Kardovsky, and N. Samokish are invited to run their own workshops.

1898

Alexander III Imperial Museum of Russian art is opened (called the State Russian Museum since 1917)

Art and literary magazine World of Art is founded. The first exhibition of the World of Art group of artists is organized in St. Petersburg by Sergei Dyagilev. Valentin Serov, Isaac Levitan, Mikhail Vrubel, Konstantin Korovin are among its participants.

1905

The Bloody Sunday of 9 January in St. Petersburg and beginning of the bourgeois-democratic revolution of 1905-1907. General political strike. On 17 October 1905 Tsar Nicholas II signs the Manifesto granting political freedoms and establishing the Duma as the central legislative body. Russia becomes constitutional monarchy.

Due to political disturbances among students the Academy is closed for a year in fall 1905.

1914

After Russia enters the World War I in August 1914, St. Petersburg is renamed Petrograd.

1917

The February revolution in Petrograd. Emperor Nicholas II abdicates the throne. The Provisional bourgeois government and the Petrograd Soviet (Council) of Workers and Soldiers are formed. Diarchy is established in the country.

On 14 September the Provisional Government declares Russia a republic.

October revolution in Petrograd. The Provisional government is blotted out. The Second Congress of the Soviets of Workers’, Soldiers’ and Peasants’ Deputies passes decrees On Peace and On Land and forms the first Soviet government called Council of People's Commissars headed by Vladimir Lenin. The Soviets seized power in other parts of Russia. Dictatorship of the proletariat is established.

On 12 November Winter Palace in Petrograd declared a state museum.


1918

On 3 March in Brest-Litovsk at the expense of enormous territorial concessions Soviet Russia sings a peace treaty with Germany making Russia’s exit from World War I.

On 12 April the Imperial Academy of Arts is dismissed by the resolution of the Council of People's Commissars (SovNarCom). The higher Art School affiliated with the former Imperial Academy of Arts is transformed into the Petrograd State Free Art Studios (PGSKhUM).

Decree On the Monuments of the Republic better known as the Lenin’s Plan of Monumental Propaganda is passed by the Council of People's Commissars on 12 April. This decree provides for the demolishment of monuments to ‘Tsars and their servants’ and prescribes “to design monuments to the Russian socialist revolution’.

Invasion of the Entante troops and occupation of Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, Vladivostok, Odessa, Novorossiysk, Sevastopol, and Baku. Beginning of the foreign military intervention and Civil War.

On 3 June the Council of People's Commissars passes a decree requiring nationalization of Tretyakov gallery.

Soviet government moves from Petrograd to Moscow. The capital of Soviet state is ‘temporarily’ transferred to Moscow.

On 19 September the Council of People's Commissars passes a decree prohibiting exportation of art works and antiquities.

On 5 November and 19 December the Council of People's Commissars passes decrees requiring nationalization of Sergei Shchukin’s art gallery and collections of A. Morozov, I. Ostroukhov and V. Morozov.

1920

Liberation of Crimea and end of Civil War

1921

The New Economic Policy (NEP) permitting private property, private enterprise and free selling of the agriculture products surplus is declared. Monetary reform is effected, ruble becomes more valuable.

The Petrograd State Free Art Studios (PGSKhUM) are transformed into the Higher Art and Technical Studios (VKhuTeMas) affiliated with the re-established Academy of Fine Arts.

1922

Association of the Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR, called Association of Artists of the Revolution (AkhR) from 1928 till its closure in 1932) is organized in Moscow. The Association is the largest art organization in post-revolutionary Russia, with 40 regional representatives all over Russia. Nikolai Dormidontov was a head of the Petrograd branch of the Association.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is formed. Moscow becomes the capital of the state.

1923

The Higher Art and Technical Studios (VKhuTeMas) are transformed into the Higher Art and Technical Institute (VKhuTeIn).

Exhibition of Painting by Petrograd Artists of All Movements. 1918-1923 is opened at the Academy of Fine Arts. The list of participants includes A. Samokhvalov, R. Frentz, A. Savinov, P. Filonov, I. The Institute of Art Culture (InKhuK) affiliated with the Museum of Art Culture is established in Petrograd. Kazimir Malevich is elected director of the Institute.

1924

Vladimir Lenin, founder of Communist Party and the Soviet State, dies on 21 January.

On January 26 the second Congress of the USSR Soviets decrees that Petrograd should be renamed Leningrad.

The first exhibition of AKhRR takes place in Leningrad.

1925

The Institute of Art Culture is transformed into the State Institute of Art Culture (GInKhuK). Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin and Mikhail Matyshin work as the heads of its experimental studios.

Pavel Filonov organizes a group of Analytical Painting Masters in Leningrad.

1926

Association of artists Circle of Artists is founded in Leningrad. A. Samokhvalov, V. Pakulin, A. Rusakov, A. Pakhomov and others belong to the circle.

The AKhRR exhibition entitled The Life of the USSR Peoples opens at the State Russian Museum. The list of participants includes M. Avilov, A. Arkhipov, I. Brodsky, A. Vakhrameev, A. Gerasimov, A. Lubimov, N. Dormidontov, A. Rylov, N. Feshin, V. Karev, V. Svarog, P. Kotov, B. Kustodiev, N. Samokish, I. Pavlov and others.

Monument to Vladimir Lenin is opened on the square in front of the Finnish railway station. This was the first completed monument to Lenin in the city.

1927

1928

Exhibition of Rudolf Frenz’s works is opened in the premises of Artists’ Commune.

Exhibition Contemporary Art Groups from Leningrad is the first venue to unite in a single exposition the works by members of the Leningrad department of AKhRR, The A. 1929

The first five-year plan of economic development is launched in the USSR. It is aimed at rapid building up Russia’s heavy industry.

The Higher Art and Technical Institute (VKhuTeIn) is transformed into the Institute of Proletarian Art.

Death of Ilya Repin (1844 – 1930), outstanding Russian artist and pedagogue.

The First Exhibition of Leningrad Art opens in the premises of the Academy of Arts. It shows works by 239 artists, including M. Avilov, M. Bobyshov, I. Brodsky, A. Vedernikov, T. Glebova, A. Guild of Artists uniting four groups of artists (namely, The A. Kuindzhi Society, The Artists’ Commune, Society of Individualists, and Society of Painters) is established in Leningrad.

1932

Exhibition Soviet Art of the Reconstruction Period opens at the State Russian Museum. The list of participants includes I. Brodsky, A. Samokhvalov, R. Frentz, A. Pakhomov, A. Rylov, N. Dormidontov, V. Malagis and others.

In April the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks (TsKVKP(b)) passes a decree On the Restructuring of Art and Literary Organizations requiring dismissal of diversified art and literary organizations and groups and establishment of the integral ‘creative unions’.

The Leningrad department of the Union of Soviet Artists (LOSSKh) is set up in Leningrad. Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, famous painter and professor of the Academy of Arts, is elected its first chairman.

Alexander Samokhvalov creates his painting Girl in T-shirt.

The Institute of Proletarian Art is transformed into the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (called Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture since 1944).

The All-Russia Central Executive Committee and the Council of People's Commissars pass a decree On the Establishment of the Academy of Arts.

The anniversary exhibition Artists of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in the Last 15 Years opens at the State Russian Museum. It shows works by 357 artists, including I. Brodsky, A. 1933

On 2 April the government establishes the National Academy of Arts (VAKh).

First issues of new magazines Iskusstvo (Art) and Tvorchestvo (Creativity) focused on art and art education are published.

Report on the country’s economic performance during the fist five-year plan (1928-1932) is published. Industrial potential of the country has doubled, 1.5 thousand large industrial plants are built in the country, including motor works in Moscow, Gorky and Yaroslavl, tractor plants in Kharkov and Stalingrad, integrated iron-and-steel works in Siberia and Ural region. A water-power station is launched on the Dnepr river, new mines and collieries are opened in Donets Basin (Donbass) and Kazakhstan. The problem of unemployment is resolved in the USSR.

Upon the decision of the 17th Congress of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks (VKP(b)), the second five-year plan (1933-1937) is launched in the USSR. It provides for the completion of the country’s industrial reconstruction and collectivization of agriculture. The plan requires further expansion of production and industrial growth.

Isaac Brodsky, the honoured artist of the RSFSR and Ilya Repin’s disciples, is appointed director of the national Academy of Arts and the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

The School for Young Talents affiliated with the Academy of Arts starts working. Soon, it will be renamed Secondary Art School.

Sergei Kirov, first secretary of the Leningrad committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks is mortally wounded on 1 December at his office in Smolny.


1935

The First General Exhibition of Leningrad Artists since the foundation of the Leningrad Union of Artists opens at the State Russian Museum. Over a thousand of works mainly created within the last three years are represented in the exposition. Most of participants are painters, including P. Buchkin, R. Frentz, A. Samokhvalov, I. Brodsky, K. Petrov-Vodkin, A. Rylov, K. Malevich, E. Cheptsov, N. Dormidontov, M. Avilov and many others.


1936

First students graduated the re-organized Academy. Exhibition of diploma works opens at the Academy of Arts.

Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin’s retro shows in Moscow and Leningrad.

The Fall Exhibition of Leningrad Artists opens at the State Russian Museum. The list of participants includes N. Kostrov, A. Samokhvalov, S. Nevelshtein, A. Zaitsev, V. Oreshnikov, M. Platunov and others.

New USSR Constitution is adopted in December.


1937

Sculptor Matvei Manizer is elected the chairman of the Leningrad Union of Artists. He takes over the office of Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin.

Isaac Brodsky wins the Grand Prix of the International Exhibition in Paris for his painting Vladimir Lenin’s Speech at the Putilov Plant.

Alexander Samokhvalov wins the Grand Prix of the International Exhibition in Paris for his panel Soviet Sport made for the Soviet pavilion, another Grand Prix for his illustrations of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin’s The History of a Town and the Major Gold Medal for his painting Girl in T-shirt.

Exhibition of diploma works by the 1937 Academy graduates opens at the Academy of Arts in December. Among its 42 participants, there are A. Aslamazyan, A. Brindarov, Z. Brozgol, N. Volodimirov, A. Debler, E. Zaitsev, P. Ivanovsky, G. Pavlovsky, S. Pozdnyakov, L. Sholokhov, S. Yunovich, I. Kalashnikov and others.


1938

Art exhibition 20 Years of Red Army and Navy opens in Moscow on 6 May. Among its 256 participants, there are M. Avilov, P. Belousov, I. Brodsky, P. Buchkin, A. Lubimov, Y. Neprintsev, R. Frentz, N. Dormidontov, I. Drozdov, A. Zhaba, M. Kopeikin, V. Kremer, A. Laktionov, A. Rylov, G. Savitsky, N. Samokish, V. Svarog, V. Serov, E. Cheptsov and other Leningrad artists.

Report on the country’s economic performance during the second five-year plan (1933-1937) is published. 4.5 thousand of significant industrial plants are built, including such giants as metallurgic works Azovstal, Zaporozhstal, Krivorozhstal, machine-tool plants in Novo-Lipetsk and Moscow, a wagon works in the Urals region, a pipe casting plant in Mogilev, metallurgic works in Tula, new oilfields in Azerbaidzhan, etc. Mechanical engineering becomes the leading branch of the Soviet economy. The USSR aggregate industrial output is the second largest in the world after the USA; the USSR economy outperforms the economies of Germany and Great Britain.

1939

The All-Union Exhibition of Young Artists Dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of Komsomol opens at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Among its participants, there are P. Belousov, P. Vasiliev, N. Veselova, A. Eremin, V. Zagonek, A. Levitin, Y. Neprintsev, A. Lubimov, T. Pushnin, E. Tabakova, A. Troshichev, V. Chekalov and other Leningrad artists.

The all-Union art exhibition The Industry of Socialism opens in Moscow. The list of participants includes I. Brodsky, P. Buchkin, N. Ionin, I. Krestovsky, A. Laktionov, A. Lubimov, M. Platunov, R. Frentz and other Leningrad artists.

Exhibition of diploma works by the 1939 Academy graduates opens at the Academy of Arts. Among its participants, there are N. Timkov, P. Belousov, E. Skuin, N. Andretsov, K. Belokurov, L. Ostrova and others.

The first meeting of the Organization Committee of the All-Union Congress of the USSR Artists takes place in Moscow. Its works is to be interrupted by the war and then resumed to be finished in 1957.

On 1 September Germany invades Poland. World War II breaks out.

Annexation of the western regions of Byelorussia and Ukraine taken by Poland during the Russian-Polish war of 1920. These territories are merged in the USSR as parts of Byelorussian and Ukrainian Soviet Socialist republics.

War between the USSR and Finland breaks out on 30 November. It will continue till March 1940. According to the peace treaty, Finland will cede significant territories on Karelian Isthmus, thus moving the USSR borderline to the north from Leningrad.


1940

Isaac Brodsky’s memorial apartment opens in Leningrad. It becomes a part of the Academy of Arts Museum. Permanent exhibition launched in the apartment shows Brodsky’s collection of Russian artists’ paintings donated to the Museum by Brodsky’s family after his death.

Ilya Repin’s memorial estate Penaty becomes a part of the Academy of Arts Museum. Temporal exposition opens in the estate.

1941

Exhibition of the Best Works by Soviet Artists opens at the State Tretyakov Gallery. The list of participants includes A. Samokhvalov, K. Petrov-Vodkin, G. Pavlovsky, I. Serebryany, R. Frentz, P. Shillingovsky, A. Laktionov, I. Brodsky and other Leningrad artists.

The Second Exhibition of Diploma Works by the 1940 Art Institutes Graduates opens in Moscow. Among its participants, there are G. Savinov, O. Bogaevskaya, M. Natarevich, A. Bantikov, D. Alkhovsky, N. Neratova and other alumni of the Repin Institute.

On 22 June the fascist Germany invades the USSR. The Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) broke out.

In July, over a million of most valuable exhibits from the collections of the State Hermitage and the State Russian Museum are evacuated to the east from Leningrad.

On 10 July defense of Leningrad starts. Volunteer corps is formed to assist the regular army.

On 4 September the regular shelling of Leningrad began. It will continue till January 1944. Massive bombing starts on 6 September.

On 8 September, the last land connection to the besieged Leningrad is severed.

In November an ice road over Lake Ladoga, the Road of Life, is established. This is the only route to connect Leningrad with the rest of the country.

In December, 38 Academy of Arts graduates defended their diploma works in the besieged Leningrad. To do that, they were ordered home from the front line.

1942

In January The First Exhibition of Works by Leningrad Artists during the Great Patriotic War opens in the besieged city.

In February the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and the Secondary Art School are evacuated via the Road of Life first to the Soviet-controlled opposite coast of Ladoga and then to Samarkand.

Medal For Defense of Leningrad is instituted.

The Leningrad première of the Seventh Symphony by Dmitry Shostakovich, also known as the Leningrad Symphony is given on 8 August by the Leningrad Radio Orchestra under Karl Eliasberg.

Igor Grabar is appointed director of the national Academy of Arts and the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

In August, exhibition Works by Leningrad Artists during the Great Patriotic War opens at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.


1943

On 18January due to a full-scale offensive of the Red Army troops a land corridor to the besieged Leningrad is opened.

On 2 February, the remnants of the German forces encircled in Stalingrad surrender. This marks the fundamental change in the course of the war.

In May, The Spring Exhibition of Works by Leningrad Artists opens in the premises of the Leningrad Union of Artists.

On January 27 the siege of Leningrad is lifted. It lasted 900 days and nights.

Exhibition Heroic Defense of Leningrad, the largest art show in the war period, opens on Solyanoi lane in Leningrad. The exposition has been prepared by a number of Leningrad artists who were ordered home from the front line for this very purpose. Among them, there were A. Blinkov, A. Bantikov, N. Timkov, Y. Neprintsev, Y. Nikolaev, G. Savinov, V. Sokolov, T. Ksenofontov, N. Rutkovsky, I. Serebryany and others.

On 18 July the national Academy of Arts, the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and the Secondary Art School return to the city from evacuation.

In February the Industrial Art College (that will soon be transformed into the Vera Mukhina Higher Art Industrial College) opens in Leningrad. The college trains monumentalists and restorers who are to rebuild museums and palaces of Leningrad and its world-famous suburbs – Pavlovsk, Pushkin, Petrodvorets (Peterhof) and others – destroyed during the war.

The Yalta conference between the heads of governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union arrives at important decisions with regard to the completion of the war against the fascist Germany and the militarist Japan and defines the postwar world order.

The battle of Berlin, encirclement and assault of Berlin by the Soviet Army. On 8 May Field Marshal Georgy Zhukov signs the final German Act of Unconditional Surrender in the Berlin outskirt of Karlshorst.

On 9 May the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet people is victoriously completed.

On June 24 the historic Victory Parade takes place on the Red Square in Moscow.

The Soviet Army takes part in defeating the militarist Japan.


1946

On 12 April Yury Gagarin completed the world’s first manned flight into space piloting the Soviet spacecraft Vostok.

The 22nd Congress of the CPSU takes place in Moscow. It votes for the third Party’s program that provides for building up communist society in the USSR. The program sees art and culture as important means of the new man formation. The program sees that the material and technical basis of communism is largely created by 1980.

The famous House of Artists is built on Pesochnaya embankment in Leningrad. This 5-storey building is made up of 55 apartments and over 100 studios for sculptors, painters and graphic artists. Guaranteed wage system is introduced at the Leningrad Union of Artists. Since this moment, artists are paid a monthly wage of 150-200 rubles, which was the average wage in industry at the time. About 500 artists of all specializations benefit from the innovation. A painter was required to submit two new accomplished works by the end of each year.
